What if I’ll never be good enough for God?

Exodus 34.6-7
When God reveals himself to Moses, the first words he uses to describe his character are “compassionate and gracious.” That matters. God does not begin with disappointment. He does not begin with distance. He does not begin by saying, “Try harder.”
He begins with mercy.
Many of us come to God assuming we have to prove we are worth his attention. We rehearse what we have done right. We explain what went wrong. We promise we will do better next time. But God’s mercy does not begin with our performance. It begins in his heart.
Today, let these words settle in your soul: God is compassionate and gracious.
💧 God, help me believe that mercy is not something I have to earn. Teach me to come to you honestly and receive what you are already offering.
Tuesday, June 23
Psalm 103.8-14
Psalm 103 echoes the words God spoke about himself in Exodus 34. The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in love. Then the psalm gives us a picture: as a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him.
God knows we are human. He knows our weakness. He knows our limits. He knows the places where we are tired, ashamed, afraid, and unsure. And still, he moves toward us with compassion.
You do not have to hide your weakness from God today. He already knows. And he is not surprised by your humanity.
🫶 Father, thank you for seeing me with compassion. Help me stop pretending and bring my whole self to you.
Wednesday, June 24
Isaiah 49.13-16
God compares his compassion to the love of a mother for her child. Then he says that even if a mother could forget, he will not forget his people. He has engraved them on the palms of his hands.
Sometimes we wonder if God has forgotten us. We wonder if our prayers matter. We wonder if we have failed too many times or drifted too far. But God’s mercy is not fragile. His love is not easily exhausted. His compassion is deeper than we know.
You are not forgotten by God.
🤲 God, when I feel unseen or forgotten, remind me that I am held in your mercy. Help me trust your compassion today.
Thursday, June 25
Luke 18.9-14
Jesus tells a story about two men praying. One stands before God with his spiritual résumé. He lists the reasons he is good, faithful, and better than others. The other man simply says, “God, have mercy on me.”
Jesus says the second man is the one who goes home right with God.
Mercy is not received by people who know how to look impressive. Mercy is received by people who come honestly. You do not need a résumé. You do not need a defense. You can come to God with empty hands and an honest heart.
🙏 God, have mercy on me. Help me come to you honestly instead of trying to prove myself.
Friday, June 26
Titus 3.3-7
Paul reminds us that God saved us not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. That is the heart of the gospel. We are not rescued because we finally became good enough. We are rescued because God is merciful.
This is hard for many of us to receive because we are used to earning everything. Approval. Respect. Trust. Success. Love. But the mercy of God is not a paycheck. It is a gift.
Today, practice receiving instead of proving.
🎁 Jesus, thank you for saving me because of your mercy, not because of my performance. Help me live from grace today.
Saturday, June 27
Hebrews 4.14-16
Hebrews tells us to approach God’s throne with confidence so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Not fear. Not shame. Not hesitation. Confidence.
Why? Because Jesus understands our weakness and invites us to come close.
Whatever you are carrying today, you do not have to carry it alone. Bring it to God. Not because you have earned the right to be heard, but because Jesus has opened the way.
🚪 Jesus, give me the courage to come close. I need your mercy and your grace today.
Sunday, June 28
Micah 7.18-19
Micah asks, “Who is a God like you?” Then he answers: God pardons sin, forgives wrongdoing, and delights to show mercy.
That phrase is beautiful. God does not reluctantly show mercy. He delights in it. Mercy is not God’s backup plan. Mercy is not God making an exception. Mercy is part of who he is.
As you prepare for worship today, remember this: you are coming to a God who delights to show mercy.
🙌 God, thank you that you delight in mercy. Help me worship you today with gratitude, honesty, and open hands.
